Information about the Card Game of Poker

Poker Card Game InformationThe game of poker is one of the most famous card games played at casinos throughout the world and poker can be played by between two to ten players.

A number of different poker games are commonplace in many of the larger casinos, including five-card draw, seven-card stud, Omaha and Texas hold 'em, all of which have different rules about the number of cards dealt and the methods of betting.

Card Game Information: Other Types

Another popular type of poker played in casinos is known as Caribbean - which is also often referred to as simply 'casino poker'. Caribbean poker operates differently from most other games, as players actually play against the casino, rather than playing against each other.

Video poker is also an increasingly popular computerised slot machine game, available in larger casinos. Following the main rules of standard five-card draw, the objective of video poker is to create the highest ranking hand possible. Rules can vary from casino to casino, so it is always advisable to check rules first, before beginning to play.

Card Game Information: Objectives / Aims

The main objective in poker is to win money by outranking other player's hands, eventually winning the game's pot. Winning hands usually consist of five cards and hands are ranked according to the rules of the particular card game. Although different types of games played in casinos may differ, they generally rank hands in the same way. In the unusual event of a tie, the pot is split equally between the winning players.

Poker is played with one standard deck of cards, consisting of 52 playing cards, and when playing, the casino dealer either charges each of the players a specific hourly rate, or simply takes an agreed percentage of the poker pot. When the casino dealer does take a percentage of the pot, this is known as the 'rake' and varies from between 5% to 10%.
